Just 3 miles from the Solway Firth coastline, in the north of Cumbria, this big creamery takes in milk from hundreds of dairy farmers on the Solway Plain and beyond.
One of the most important of the Dairy Crest Group of creameries in the UK, they produce cheddar to six flavour levels (57% of the UK cheese consumption is Cheddar), Double Gloucesters and their own recipe for Cumbrian Cheddar.
Aspatria Creamery is a major employer in this remote rural part of the North West region with several generations of families working in the creamery and low turnover of the 77 staff, which keeps consistency at a high level. It is important that the big supermarkets for whom they produce cheddar in all its strengths, acknowledge the pride and skill of Aspatria's workforce on the label. It matters to consumers that they chose cheddar made in Aspatria rather than Ireland, New Zealand or Canada.
Available from Asda, Morrisons, Safeway and Tesco supermarkets under the Dairy Crest label and the own label of the multiple. If you are touring this part of Cumbria, close to Carlisle do call in on a Thursday at their creamery's shop for a tasting and to buy (9am-3pm).
